How to set up a Static IP

Windows XP

1) Click start and then Control Panel
2) Open 'network connections'
3) Right click the connection you use.  It will most likely be called 'Local Area Connection' or something similar. Select Properties.
4) You will get a box similar to the following.

5) Click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click the properties button.
6) In the box that appears you need to click in 'Use the following IP address' and then fill in the box as follows

The last figure in the IP address (the blurry bit above) is for you to choose. Any number between 3 and 254 is generally ok.

DNS server is set to 192.168.1.1 which is the IP address of the router.
All this means is that Windows will send any DNS requests to the router,
which in turn sends them to the DNS servers assigned to it when you connected to your broadband.
You do NOT need to fill in the alternate DNS server address.

Note that if you have a netgear router, all the 192.168.1.1 should be replaced with 192.168.0.1

Click OK till all the boxes are gone.  Thats it. Windows is now configured to use a static IP address.
